SPELLS & SCALES Book 2 – COMING MARCH 19, 2021
Blurb
Months have passed since they were together. Yosef has gone back to his job at Delectable Bites, waiting for the day Ayako returns to him. The half dragon is at the Dragon’s Spine learning how to control her newly woken dragon’s ability.
After Yosef’s old friend hires them, they find themselves on a quest. A mysterious tree has appeared near the seaside town of Oceania. But they have little to go on and no idea what they might face.
With blossoming powers she barely understands and an attack that still haunts her, Ayako needs to face what she fears in order to grow. Yosef’s love for Ayako still takes him by surprise. He worries about dragging her into the unknown and his ability to keep her safe.
The adventure will change them both and secrets will be revealed.
Excerpt
Ayako stood and fetched him a mug of ale. The simple task helped to calm her mind and steady her heart. She’d heard tales but had never seen her mother’s legendary temper. A raised voice would have been preferable over the shimmering rage assaulting her through her empathic ability. All emotions had a taste to them; this one was bitter and acidic. She placed the drink in front of him, and he held the tankard with both hands. “What was that about?”
He took a big drink from the metal cup then placed it on the table. “The day I met your mother, she was caged. Trapped by a necromancer with ideas of siphoning off her power and making himself a living god. When the man offered me an obscene amount of gold to kill her, I refused.”
“You never told me.” The story she’d been told was more a comedy of errors. A young adventurer falling for the dragon over the maiden he’d been sent to rescue. She’d never suspected the tale to be a lie.
“You don’t tell your young daughter the truth. You tell her the fairy tale.” He sighed then took another long drink. “I shouldn’t have said anything, it’s a painful memory. You can’t fault her for trying to protect you, sweets. A mother’s duty is to keep her children safe.” He finished the drink, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand.
“You’ll still let me leave?”
“We can’t keep you here.” He smiled at her, intensely sad but hopeful. “She’ll forgive me eventually, and if she doesn’t, I’ll spend the rest of my life apologising to her. Bringing up the past was a low blow, but she needs to know she’s keeping you trapped here.”
Ayako rushed around the table and placed a kiss on the top of her father’s head, squeezing his shoulder. “Good luck.”
“I think I’m going to need it. Now, head to bed. I’m going to wait until your mother returns.”
